At Målbar, we have always been dedicated to making climate calculations more accessible, reliable, and actionable. Now, we are proud to take this commitment one step further—by actively contributing to shaping the future of environmental footprint calculations in the EU.
We are honored that our Co-founder and Head of Data, Anders Koefoed, and Head of Engineering, Morten Gulbrant Sørensen, have been appointed as members of the EU Data Working Group (DWG).
This expert group provides guidance to the European Commission on the data used by the Product and Organisation Environmental Footprint (PEF/OEF) methods—a crucial framework for measuring and comparing the environmental impact of products and organisations across Europe.
A mission for greater coordination and impact
Among others, the sub-group will provide advice and expertise to the Commission as follows:
- To define a procedure and timeline for the update and release of EF datasets
- To fine tune the current EF datasets
- To define a set of minimum requirements to be fulfilled by a software to be “EF ready”;
- To agree on an improved review procedure and data quality rating system;
- Information exchange beyond the format.
The discussions and deliverables from this working group will directly influence the evolution of EF-compliant datasets, EF-related software, and the EF reference package, helping to create more transparent, standardised, and science-based methodologies for environmental assessments.
“We hope that our experience from applying PEF rules to millions of product calculations can help in making the rules more simple and point out where more data is needed. It is not only necessary to ensure accurate and reliable data but also to make it easy to identify and apply correctly in calculations.”
Anders Koefoed
Co-founder, Head of Analytics and Data
Why this matters
For years, businesses and industries have faced challenges when working with Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and environmental footprint calculations—from inconsistent data quality to complex software integrations.
The work of the DWG aims to address these barriers by improving harmonisation and ensuring that PEF-compliant datasets are accurate, accessible, and practical to use.
As a company deeply engaged in making climate impact assessments more actionable for manufacturers, and businesses, Målbar is uniquely positioned to contribute hands-on knowledge from our work with PEF rules and the Environmental Footprint database.
A step toward better environmental data
By being part of this group, we hope to bridge the gap between technical frameworks and practical implementation, ensuring that the PEF rules remain clear, applicable, and relevant across industries.
This is not just about improving calculations—it’s about creating a system that businesses can trust and that ultimately helps consumers make more informed choices so they can contribute to the green transition.
We are excited to take part in this important initiative and look forward to collaborating with experts from across Europe to advance the future of environmental footprint calculations.
